Manganese is a silver-white metal. Together with iron and its alloys, it belongs to ferrous metals. There are five allotropic modifications of manganese known - four with a cubic and one with a tetragonal crystal grid.
The silver white colour with a slight grey tone highlights manganese. It exceeds iron in hardness and brittleness. It is paramagnetic. In the interaction with air, manganese is oxidised. Covered with an oxide film that protects it from subsequent oxidative reactions.
It dissolves in water, absorbs hydrogen completely without reacting with it. When heated, it burns out in oxygen. Actively reacts with chlorine and sulphur. In the interaction with acidic oxidants, it forms manganese salts. At high temperatures, it changes with nitrogen, phosphorus, silicon and boron. Slowly reacts with cold water.
