Publisher Description

An Edith Wharton and Henry James pairing explores 'reality' in two classic tales. Using shades of irony to capture moments of surprise and sadness, Edith Wharton and Henry James play with reality - in the work of a portrait artist and in the secret love of a 'fallen' woman for her daughter. Two cousins, one a well-to-do adoptive mother and the other a poor woman whose child knows her only as 'Aunt Chatty', vie for the girl's affection in Wharton's surprisingly explicit novella. James explores reality and illusion when an artist hires an aristocratic couple, who have fallen on hard times, to model and finds that their images do not work for his upper-class paintings. Together, 'The Old Maid' and 'The Real Thing' examine class and gender expectation versus actual experience.

Review

"This remarkable volume is a small treasure."
--Brenda Wineapple, author of Hawthorne: A Life "The inimitable Edith Wharton and her friend, the unerring Henry James--their ironies pristine as ever--produce: brilliant satires pitting convention and patent-leather against the moral complexity of the human heart."
--Brenda Wineapple, author of White Heat "There is something deeply adventurous about these works. . . . Both Wharton and James hold our attention, unceasingly, by opposing forces, male and female, and more subtly, by the counterfoils."
--Mary Ann Caws, from the Introduction

Description for Sales People

Two distinguished authors, who in life were great friends, are united in the first anthology to explicitly compare their work. This unique pairing should entice literary readers and also provide an entry point for those readers who have been intimidated by the more weighty volumes of these two essential authors. Both stories vividly portray the unfortunate victims of the human capacity to view illusion as more real at times than actual reality. Both stories also explore themes of gender and class expectation. Expert Mary Ann Caws paired the two stories; her informative introduction situates the tales, shows how they work together and how the backgrounds of and friendship between Wharton and James affected their writings. The sixth book in the 2x2 series, which pairs the literary writings of men and women in new and provocative ways.
