(STAUFFER & COMPANY) "PEERLESS" 18ct GOLD LADIES POCKET WATCH c1897. Stauffer, Son & Co was founded in 1830 in Chaux de Fonds Switzerland. By 1860 they had opened a UK outlet & they were trading as a partnership (Jules Stauffer & Francis Claude), at 12 Old Jewry Chambers London EC. Jules Stauffer subsequently retired with his place being taken by Charles Nicolet. They were listed in Directories during this period as wholesale watch manufacturers & importers. They manufactured their own watch movements & parts at the Stauffer, Son & Co, 'Atlas' watch factory in Switzerland, & they also imported other movements from various other Swiss manufacturers including I.W.C. These watches were marketed with the S&Co. or SS&Co. trademarks (Stauffer, Son & Company) & the I.W.C. watches were all marketed under the name "Peerless". Claude retired in 1874 leaving Nicolet to take control of the firm & in 1887 they moved to 13 Charterhouse Street, Holborn, London EC. If you look on Ebay it appears that every watch with the Stauffer name is being linked with the International Watch Company (I.W.C.), but i am afraid that this simply is not the case. Stauffer produced millions of watches & only a small percentage of these watches were fitted with movements supplied by I.W.C. On the topic of Stauffer Son & Co., The International Watch Company's own web site ([Link von eBay entfernt] ) states, "From 1894 the London branch of this Anglo-Swiss firm was supplied with watches from Schaffhausen & the movements of these bore the mark 'S & Co.' under the crown with the words 'Peerless' & 'Swiss Made'. CASE: This stunning antique pocket timepiece comes housed in Swiss made, triple hinged 18ct gold case which measures 33mm in diameter x 11mm thick. It has Swiss 18ct gold hallmarks, case makers mark of A.B. (Arthur Baume) & the retailers name of Z. Barraclough & Sons Leeds. The bow is gold plated, but the rest of the case is crafted from solid 18ct gold. The case has a few dings & the plating has off the crown, but apart from that, the case remains in a good all round condition for a watch of this vintage. The hallmarks are still crisp, all hinges are good & all case covers snap shut. The case has been fully stripped, cleaned & polished, we have polished & re-fitted the original mineral glass crystal, subsequently this watch is crisp, clean & ready for use!!! DIAL & HANDS: The original white enamel dial is mint with no chips or hairlines, it has black Roman numeral hour markers, black chapter ring on the dial perimeter & sunken subsidiary dial to register the seconds. This watch retains its original blued steel spade & poker style hands, which remain a vivid cobalt blue colour. MOVEMENT: This watch has a size 12 ligne I.W.C. calibre 52 Swiss lever movement, it has frosted gilt plates with polished steel screws, 15 jewels, 3 chatons, bi metalic split compensated balance, blued steel hairspring with Breguet overcoil & polished steel regulator. This movement is fully signed I.W.C. Probus Shafusia on the dial plate, & on the top plate it is stamped S&Co. Beside the balance it is stamped with the I.W.C. serial number 154327 (which gives a production date of 1897). This movement has been fully inspected by one of our technicians, it has also been electronically timed & regulated, subsequently it now keeps time to within +15 to -15 seconds per day. SUMMARY: This one really is a super old watch, the pedigree & quality of this watch alone, ensure that this is a watch which would grace anyone's collection, but then add in the fact that this watch comes in a 18ct solid gold case, then you can see that we have a very special watch for sale, so do yourself a favour & do not miss out on your chance to own this wonderful & rare vintage watch!!! |
