Biography -  Ermenegildo Zegna- Ermenegildo Zegna biograhpy -  Born: Trivero, Italy, 1892  Died: Trivero, Italy, 1966 Angelo Zegna originally started a watchmaking business in the second half of the 19th century. Starting to experiment with weaving wool, Angelo gradually  moved the business into another direction – garments. Having ten children, his last, Ermenegildo, took over from his Angelo, continuing the family business. A young entrepreneur, Ermenegildo Zegna founded the Lanificio Zegna, a wool mill, in 1910 in Trivero. Zegna began producing fabrics using four looms. He  described the fabrics as “the most beautiful in the world”. With an international vision, Zegna wanted to source the best fibres directly from their country  of origin. With this aim, Zegna was soon exporting fabrics to America by 1938 and by 1945; Zegna fabrics were sold in over 40 countries. While his company  was expanding, Zegna placed an importance on having a positive relationship with his environment. This led to him building a medical centre, nursery school  and planting thousands of trees around Trivero. With Zegna now married with children, his son’s, Angelo and Aldo, started working for the company, learning  their father’s secrets. By the sixties Angelo and Aldo were gradually taking over the management of the Wool Mill from their father. Under Angelo and Aldo’s  influence, the company expanded to produce ready-to-wear collection and a made-to-measure range. The company started distributing and producing internationally  and opened their first brand stores in Paris and Milan. In 1968, the business opened a factory in Novara, Italy, producing trousers and sleeves. The garments were immediately successful due to the quality of the fabrics. The brothers started expanded the business abroad starting in Spain and then Switzerland which led to them almost worldwide. Around the same period, they  included accessories and sportswear to their product list. By 1972 the business officially launched their made to measure service. Like their father, the brothers  believed in the welfare of their workers and surrounding community. Aldo and Angelo created a 14km road linking Trivero with Bielmonte in the Italian Alps. They  also built a residential housing estate. Aldo and Angelo trained their children into the business just as Ermenegildo had done with them. Their children; Ermenegildo,  Paolo, Anna, Benedetta, Laura and Renata were all taught the companies secrets and prepared for managerial positions. The new generation expanded Zegna’s global  position and by the end of the nineties, the company now had ranges from clothing to accessories. In 2002, Zegna took over the Longhi brand. The same year a joint  venture with the Salvatore Ferragamo group was established in order to develop a worldwide footwear and leather goods business. The following year in 2003, a  fragrance was launched. Three more fragrances have followed.  In 2004 sunglasses and eyewear were added to the business portfolio which followed with an  underwear collection in 2006. The Ermenegildo Zegna and Z Zegna lines where shown at Milan fashion week in 2008. Zegna is known as one of Italy’s most famous  family driven enterprises. Growing through its generations, the business is known for its luxurious, sustainable fabrics used on exquisite menswear. Ermenegildo Zegna Group - The road ahead that Ermenegildo Zegna Group keeps following originated in 1910. Physically and passionately, we are still journeying down  the 232 Road our founder built over 110 years ago in Piedmont, Northern Italy, which at the time was no more than barren rocks and one man’s unwavering dream for  the future. His road was made up of ideas and principles, of the very fabric of tomorrow. This road is our inspiration as it defines our path, woven into everything we  do by echoing the essential truth of our founder. It is OUR ROAD TO TOMORROW. founder not only built one of Italy’s most successful family companies, but along  the way he built a community around his wool mill and planted the Oasi Zegna nature territory sprawling 100 km2, on what was once a near lifeless mountainside,  establishing a legacy of environmental protection and sustainability. He built a new kind of ethical entrepreneurship and an ethos of giving back. Every day since, the  road he paved has guided our responsible development, having steadily evolved from a superior wool fabric producer to a global luxury group, encompassing the brands  Zegna and Thom Browne, and a Luxury Textile Laboratory Platform, an unrivalled textile manufacturing division, fostering the best Italian fabrics through the preservation  of precious Italian artisanal mills as well as Cappellificio Cervo. Road is a powerful symbol for the Ermenegildo Zegna Group. It charts our history and our mission, entwined  in progressive ideas. It always looks forward, forging a future that is worthy of our dreams, while also leaving a path that others might follow, purposefully enabling our  community with a shared mindset. Led by Gildo Zegna as CEO and Chairman, the Group designs, creates and distributes luxury menswear and accessories under the Zegna  brand and womenswear, menswear and accessories under the Thom Browne brand. The founder’s mission, passed on from one generation to the next with visionary entrepreneurial  finesse, is to create beautiful things of the finest quality applying a responsible approach to production. In this sense, superb fabrics, impeccable clothing and outstanding  accessories come together to preserve a unique ecosystem. At Ermenegildo Zegna Group, innovation meets belief, seamlessly, in a powerhouse based fundamentally on the stronghold of human force and run on the principle that  industrial activities should not harm the environment, to create a lifestyle which marches to the rhythm of the modern times while nurturing a bond to the natural world  for a better present and future.Vertically integrated and with a widening span of activities, the Group is based on a fearless vision and a quest for innovation, fostering  beauty as a value. Investing in a culture of beauty means promoting knowledge, a social capital of relations and trust, but also the symbolic capital of identity and recognizability.  Beauty, for Zegna Group, is instrumental in generating new thought, in creating connections and dialogue, in producing values shared collectively and internationally. It is the  fuel that ultimately activates movement on this road, on OUR ROAD TO TOMORROW. HISTORY AND DEVELOPMENT OF THE ERMENEGILDO ZEGNA GROUP September 2014 - The Ermenegildo Zegna Group is the worldwide leader in luxury menswear with more than 7,000 employees worldwide and consolidated Group revenues that totaled €1.270 billion in 2013. Over 90% of the Group’s sales are from exports; China is the largest market followed by Europe and the Americas. The Zegna retail channel represents 78% of the total sales of the brand and is of great strategic importance. By the end of 2013, Zegna had branched out in the most important cities of 100 different countries, with a total of 546 stores (312 of which are directly operated). The Ermenegildo Zegna Group, founded in 1910 in Trivero (Italy) by the young entrepreneur Ermenegildo Zegna, continues to be run as a family business that remains faithful to the vision of the founder: the ethical production of the best and most exclusive fabrics in the world through innovation and the sourcing of noble fibers directly from their markets of origin. Now managed by the fourth generation of the Zegna family, the Group is led by Ermenegildo Zegna, CEO, and by Paolo Zegna, Chairman. Zegna’s entrance in the high-end menswear market was led by Ermenegildo’s sons, Angelo and Aldo, in the 1960s. In the late 1980s the Group solidified its position as a leading global luxury and lifestyle brand when it completed its process of vertical integration. Today, with the management of the fourth generation, the commitment to the highest quality of fabrics, garments and accessories, the focus on direct retail operations, the continuous investment in innovation and the penetration of emerging markets are strategic elements that define Zegna’s identity and its 100 years of excellence. Over the years, Zegna has carefully expanded its scope of activities. In 1999 it acquired the luxury woman’s fashion brand Agnona, and in 2003 Ermenegildo Zegna entered the fragrance business with its first license agreement followed in 2011 by a new agreement signed with the Estée Lauder Companies. The Group signed two worldwide licensing agreements in 2006 with Perofil to develop, produce and distribute a line of men's underwear and in 2013 with Marcolin for the worldwide production and distribution of sunglasses and eyeglasses. In 2010, the Group began its collaboration with Girard-Perregaux, the symbol of Swiss "Haute Horlogerie. In 2013 Zegna entered into a long term collaboration with Maserati to produce a limited edition sedan, the Quattroporte by Ermenegildo Zegna. The Maserati car, unveiled in spring 2014, has be reinterpreted and customized with fabrics produced by the historic Lanificio Zegna wool mill in Trivero. The collaboration with Maserati will develop in the future with new and ambitious projects. In September 2012 the Ermenegildo Zegna Group appointed Stefano Pilati as Creative Director of Agnona, and Head of Design for the Ermenegildo Zegna Couture collectionto strengthen the fashion content of the brands. The Ermenegildo Zegna Group has a longstanding commitment to environmental and social responsibility. Founder Ermenegildo Zegna was committed to enhancing the environment: starting in the early 1930s he implemented an important reforestation program in his territory of origin and building the “Panoramica Zegna” road. In 1993 Oasi Zegna was established, which is a protected area spanning 100 km2. To confirm the Company’s commitment to social responsibility, the Zegna Group pursues, year after year, continuous research to ensure the highest quality of its products in absolute respect of the environment. Moreover, the Group manages the philanthropic activities of the Zegna family in support of organizations that work to improve society and the environment. These activities are promoted by Fondazione Zegna, of which Anna Zegna is President. In 2012 a new Ermenegildo Zegna project was launched worldwide: ZegnArt, a structured set of activities in the field of visual arts within a contemporary context. The leading role that the Ermenegildo Zegna Group continues to play in the field of culture, directly or through Fondazione Zegna, is reaffirmed with the donation of over 3% of the net profits on yearly basis. As part of the ongoing policy of human resource development that the Zegna Group supports through training and incentive programs, the inauguration of the Ermenegildo Zegna Founder’s Scholarship was announced in 2014. The program will provide €1 million annually to enable talented Italian graduates to pursue postgraduate studies, while encouraging them to return to Italy upon completion of their programs abroad. The project is expected to run for 25 years and is a tribute to the Group’s founder, Ermenegildo Zegna, who was well-known for his philanthropy and commitment to
