While the author, Jürgen Espenhorst, visited the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C., in the year 1995 to present a copy of his book ANDREE STIELER MEYER & CO, enthusiastic members of staff told him "We need this in English!" The result was a collaboration over several years with Dr. George R. Crossman, who served as translator and editor, of which the result was a two-volume bibliography of Hand Atlases in English: Petermann's Planet. It is a more detailed and comprehensive successor of Espenhorst's first work as it contains information about 18 more atlas families than the afore mentioned book. The first volume, which is offered here, covers the story of the six largest atlas families. The second volume (from 2008), which is offered separately, covers an additional 66 smaller families. The two volumes added together contain more than 1,000 color illustrations on a total of about 1,400 pages. They provide a comprehensive picture of this important field and is a rich resource for:
  • The Bibliophile: Out of Thousands of atlases, several hundreds have been selected to illustrate the milestones, which mark the development of both the content and the appearance of these atlases.
  • The Cartophile: With hundreds of carefully chosen color images, the most important trends in the evolution of the cartographic styles used in atlas maps are illustrated.
  • The Technophile: Many of the maps demonstrate the unique development of cartographic printing technology, from copper engraving to offset printing.
Additionally, it provides a wealth of information for both the amateur and the professional in four important areas:
  • Biographical Data: The key figures, who helped to determine the course of atlas cartography and the publishing houses, in which they worked, emerge from the darkness of time.
  • International Trade: An atlas was a valuable commodity. In German-speaking European countries they were an important export article. Both volumes describe cartographic material published for Argentina, Austria, Australia, Belgium, Brazil, Canadam Czechoslovakia, Denmark, Finland, France, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Japan, Latvia, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Russia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, the United Kingdom and the United States.
  • Academic Research: Sources, locations, references to professional literature and cross-references of all kinds are contained in thousands of footnotes. Access to this information is aided by the inclusion of a comprehensive index of names.
  • Practical facts and figures: The book contains detailed information regarding the size, design, format and rarity of the atlases, thus providing the essential information needed to evaluate the woth of individual works today. The work not only incorporates the author's previous work in this field, but includes numerous new discoveries that were never before discussed in professional literature.
For all these reasons, Petermann's Planet is a must-have for everyone who has an interest in the afore mentioned fields.
