Description
Pack of 10 fresh seeds of Dendrocalamus asper (Giant bamboo) – with full instructions for germination
A huge bamboo native to Southeast Asia, forming dense clumps of up to 12-20 m (40–65 feet) in height within temperate Europe. Its woody culms are 8-20 cm in diameter, with relatively thick walls (11-20 mm). Clumping bamboo ( non-invasive)
Green culms are covered in a fuzzy, velvet-like, grey-brown layer. Leaf-blades are lance-shaped and between 15-30 cm long and 10-25 mm wide. Lower culms show aerial roots from nodes
They grow well on various soil types, even on sandy and rather acid soils, but prefer well-drained, heavy soils. Hardy to around -3 ºC (25 ºF), sometimes colder, but the key is to keep the soil on the dry side during any frost
Bamboo seeds are not always available due to worldwide shortages of most species; this is because they rarely flower, sometimes only every 30 to even 100 years (called gregarious flowering) - this is why bamboo seeds are very rare
