1852 REISEN IN TATARISCHES THIBET CHINA 1844-56 von ABBE HUC VOLS I II Tibet Peking
I have here for sale a TWO VOLUME SET of books entitled TRAVELS IN TARTARY, THIBET, AND CHINA During the Years 1844-5-6 by M HUC Translated from the French by W Hazlitt VOLS I & II Illustrated with Fifty Engravings on Wood Volume I Third Edition, Volume II Second Edition, published by The National Illustrated Library, London, undated, but online research indicates c.1852. Following the establishment of an Apostolic Vicariat of Mongolia Messrs Gabet and Huc, two Lazarists attached to the petty mission of Si-Wang, were dispatched on a fact finding mission. Having reached Lha-Ssa they were deported back to China. The volumes were subsequently published in Paris. The books include a full-page b/w illustration and illustrated title page, with numerous in-text b/w illustrations. Volume I also includes a fold-out Map of Tartary, Thibet and China showing the route that Gabet and Huc took.
Orange cloth boards with a blind stamped decorative design. Marks on the boards. Gilt lettering and decoration on the spines which have darkened. Light foxing and a little browning to pages. All pages are firm and the books are in very good condition. Vol I: viii, 284 pages. Vol II: 304 pages. 19.5 cm x 13.5 cm.
