Im 15. Jahrhundert erließ König Zar'a Ya'cob ein Dekret, wonach alle Christen ein Kreuz un den Hals tragen sollten. Äthiopier erhalten deshalb bei ihrer Taufe eine Halsschnur ("mateb"), an die später ein Halskreuz wie das abgebildete angehängt werden kann.
